66 Students Take the Oath as TUM Medschool Marks Second White Coat Ceremony

The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) School of Medicine and Health Sciences held its second White Coat Ceremony, with 66 students taking the oath just over a year after the school’s launch in September 2025, the first medical school in Mombasa and one of only thirteen institutions in Kenya chartered to offer medicine.

The event also marked the formal launch of the school’s new student body, the TUM School of Medicine Students Association (TUMSOMA), presented to the gathering by its chairperson.

In attendance were the Belgian Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Tom Niejens, who served as chief guest, TUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Leila Abubakar, guests from Ghent University, and the Dean of the School of Medicine, Prof. Rogena Emily.

In his remarks, Ambassador Niejens delivered a message centered on humanism, urging students not to focus solely on disease processes but to remain grounded in human connection with their patients.

Prof. Abubakar described the white coat as a symbol of purity, integrity, and professionalism.
